Right-dislocations: influence of information structure on prosodic phrasing and intonation
نویسنده
چکیده
This study discusses results of three experiments investigating whether rightdislocations are accented in Catalan, and whether they compulsorily form independent units. The latter hypothesis – at least in its stronger version – finds no support in either of the experiments. As for accentuation, results in Experiment 1 and 2 confirm that right-dislocations are mostly deaccented, though Experiment 3 offers contradictory results. Discrepancies are explained in terms of differences in the information structure in the discourse.

A multi-level approach to focus, phrasing and intonation in French
Much recent work on German and English intonation has addressed the impact of information structure on prosodic patterns in terms of the focus/background partition. In contrast with stress-accent languages such as Italian, Spanish or English, French does not appear to signal focus through pitch accent assignment, rather it appears to mainly exploit prosodic edge marking for the same purposes. متن کاملOn the prosodic marking of contrast in Romance sentence topic: evidence from Neapolitan Italian
In this paper we present data in Neapolitan Italian that show a clear phonological difference in intonation between a clitic left dislocated object topic in an exhaustive answer and in a partial answer. In the latter, the topic expression is set aside in its own prosodic phrase, made of a rising accent (H*) followed by a !Hboundary tone. An exhaustive answer does not show such phrasing pattern....
متن کاملProsodic phrasing unique to the acquisition of L2 intonation - an analysis of L2 Japanese intonation by L1 Swedish learners
This paper examines the prosodic organization of L2 Japanese produced by L1 Swedish at the beginner level. Japanese and Swedish have been well studied for their prosodic structures and some well-defined prosodic phrases have been proposed. However, these existing prosodic phrases are found to be inadequate in analyzing L2 intonation seen as interlanguage. Instead, it consists of some unique phr...
متن کاملEffect of narrow focus on tonal realization in Georgian
This article examines the prosodic correlates of focus in Georgian declarative sentences, based on speech production data. Georgian is an intonation language with flexible word order, and it is sensitive to information structure. It is shown in the paper that focus has an impact on duration but does not systematically change the tonal realization of the constituents. Most prosodic correlates of...
متن کاملPunctuation, Prosody, and Discourse: Afterthought Vs. Right Dislocation
In a reading production experiment we investigate the impact of punctuation and discourse structure on the prosodic differentiation of right dislocation (RD) and afterthought (AT). Both discourse structure and punctuation are likely to affect the prosodic marking of these right-peripheral constructions, as certain prosodic markings are appropriate only in certain discourse structures, and punct...
